Ayesha Shafqat Advocate for Disability Rights & Social Activist

By Ayesha Shafqat

Being wheelchair-bound has never defined my strength or determination. As the President of Jannat Welfare Foundation, a social activist, and a motivational speaker, I have dedicated my life to supporting people with disabilities (PWDs). Years ago, I took the initiative to provide essential aid, including wheelchairs, washroom chairs, and ration supplies, ensuring that those in need received the support they deserved. My journey is a testament to resilience, proving that no challenge is too great to overcome.

It began with a simple belief—disability should never stop anyone from achieving their dreams. However, PWDs often face discrimination, lack of resources, and limited opportunities. Seeing these challenges inspired me to build a more inclusive society where PWDs are empowered, not just supported.

Breaking Barriers for Accessibility

In Pakistan, accessibility remains a major challenge for PWDs, especially in transportation and buildings. Many public places, offices, and educational institutions still lack wheelchair-friendly infrastructure, making mobility a daily struggle. This lack of accessibility denies PWDs the right to live independently and participate in society equally.

I have actively raised my voice for disability-friendly infrastructure and accessibility rights. My efforts have led to improvements in several areas, with more organizations and institutions recognizing the need for change. However, the struggle continues, as there is still a long way to go in making Pakistan truly accessible for everyone. I will not stop advocating until every building, workplace, and public space accommodates individuals with disabilities.

A Vision for Empowerment

My ultimate goal is to establish an institution for disabled women where they receive education, accommodation, religious teachings, and specialized training tailored to their needs. This institution will not only provide academic learning but also focus on skill development so that PWDs can secure employment and live with dignity.

As a wheelchair user myself, I understand the daily struggles of PWDs. Financial constraints prevent many families from affording even the necessities for their disabled members. Many children grow up without a wheelchair, without access to education, and without opportunities to become self-sufficient. This cycle of dependency needs to change. My mission is to create a society where PWDs are independent, respected, and given equal opportunities rather than being treated as burdens.

Recognition & Achievements

For my contributions to disability rights and social activism, I have been honored with numerous national and international awards, including the Pride of Pakistan, Train the Youth, Pakistan Youth Icon Award, Best Youth Activist Award, and the Khadija Tul Kubra Award by the UN. These awards are not just personal achievements but a recognition of the struggle faced by millions of PWDs in our country. Each honor reminds me that my work is making a difference, but there is still much more to do.

Committed to an Inclusive Future

My journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and the belief that change is possible. I remain committed to advocating for a more inclusive and accessible Pakistan. Through my foundation, I will continue to support PWDs, raise awareness, and push for policy changes that protect their rights.

The fight for disability rights continues, and I will keep working to create a society where every individual, regardless of ability, has equal opportunities to thrive. With the support of like-minded individuals, organizations, and policymakers, I believe we can build a future where disability is no longer seen as a limitation but as a unique strength.

The road ahead may be challenging, but I will never lose hope. Together, we can make Pakistan a country where accessibility, inclusion, and empowerment are a reality for all.
