Maham Saleem: From Handmade Crafts to Entrepreneurship

Maham Saleem From Handmade Crafts to Entrepreneurship

By Maham Saleem

As the founder of The Mamay Door, my journey is one of passion, resilience, and an unshakable belief in my dreams. It all started in my second year of university when a thought struck me—why not create something of my own? At just 20 years old, with no prior experience but a deep love for handmade crafts, I decided to turn creativity into something bigger. On August 12, 2020, I took a leap of faith and launched a business, not knowing that this small step would change my life forever.

What began as a simple idea soon became a journey of self-discovery and perseverance. With no background in business, marketing, or branding, I faced uncertainty at every step. But what I lacked in experience, I made up for with dedication and an eagerness to learn. From late nights perfecting my craft to endless hours researching how to grow a business, I embraced every challenge as an opportunity to grow. There were moments of doubt, times when orders stopped coming in, and instances where people dismissed my work as insignificant. But through it all, my passion kept me going. I refused to let setbacks define me, and instead, I turned them into stepping stones toward success.

The First Big Break and Challenges

A month after starting, I expanded my business by introducing resin art. It turned out to be a lucky charm for me! I posted my first resin-based product, and to my surprise, I received my first big order – 12 keychains. I was thrilled! I put my heart and soul into completing that order, ensuring everything was perfect. It was successfully delivered, and I felt like I was on the right track.

However, what followed was something I wasn’t prepared for – I didn’t receive a single order for months. The excitement faded, and stress started creeping in. I had invested significantly in materials, hoping to recover the cost soon, but the reality was different. The friend who initially offered me support slowly distanced herself. My requests for guidance and help were ignored as if I didn’t exist.

Being an introvert, it was tough for me to reach out to new people or ask for help, but I knew I couldn’t give up.

Learning and Growing Independently

Determined to keep my business alive, I started exploring things on my own. I spent hours learning about marketing strategies, practicing photography and videography, creating content, and writing engaging posts. I realized that if I wanted my business to thrive, I had to understand and manage everything myself.

During this time, some people mocked me for selling handmade products, dismissing them as “foolish” and “worthless.” However, my biggest support system was my family. My mama and sister constantly encouraged me, reminding me that hard work always pays off. My younger brother, just nine years old, helped me in small ways, always eager to support me in whatever way he could. Their belief in me kept me going.

Overcoming Obstacles and Embracing Growth

One year into the business, I had groomed myself significantly. I had learned countless new skills and developed confidence in my abilities. The journey had its ups and downs, but despite the low revenue, I managed to sustain myself. The struggles taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of continuous learning.

Fast forward to five years later, and I can now say my journey has been incredible. The revenue I generated from my business helped me complete my thesis, something I take immense pride in. My business has become a part of my daily routine, something that keeps me motivated and hopeful.

Over the years, I have expanded my product range, and each time I introduce a new item, I receive immense love and support. Through my business, I have not only earned financial independence but also built a strong network of friends and supporters. Even though my introverted self sometimes feels exhausted, I cherish the connections I have made along the way.

Looking back, I am incredibly grateful for every challenge and triumph that shaped me into the entrepreneur I am today. The Mamay Door is more than just a business—it’s a reflection of perseverance, passion, and growth.
