Viroonh Zulf: Championing Change for Women Athletes

Viroonh Zulf Championing Change for Female Athletes

By Viroonh Zulf

I am a dedicated sports educator and advocate for women in sports. My journey has been anything but conventional, marked by perseverance, challenges, and an unshakable passion for empowering women athletes. From playing on the field to stepping into the role of a referee and mentor, I have committed my life to building a thriving sports culture for women in Pakistan.

In a society where women’s participation in sports is often met with resistance, I have always believed in pushing boundaries and building opportunities where none existed. As a certified Pakistan Football Federation referee and a passionate advocate for women’s sports, my mission is to break barriers and open new doors for aspiring female athletes.

A Journey Rooted in Passion

With a Master’s degree in Health, Physical Education, and Sports Science, my love for sports has always been at the core of who I am. However, I quickly realized that opportunities for women in athletics were scarce. The challenges went beyond just participation—there was a lack of support, recognition, and platforms for female athletes to grow. Instead of waiting for change, I decided to be the change, dedicating myself to breaking barriers and creating pathways for women in sports. I knew that if I wanted to see progress, I had to take the first step and inspire others to do the same.

Currently, I work as a Sports Teacher at Head Start School System, where I train and mentor young athletes, helping them develop confidence, discipline, and a winning mindset. I believe that sports are not just about competition but also about building character, resilience, and teamwork—values that shape individuals for life. Alongside this, I stepped into refereeing—becoming one of the few female referees in Pakistan—officiating high-stakes football matches with precision and authority. Standing on the field, making critical decisions, and ensuring fair play has been an empowering experience. It is a role that demands confidence, quick thinking, and leadership, and I take pride in proving that women belong in every aspect of the game—not just as players but also as decision-makers and enforcers of the rules.

Championing Women in Sports

Understanding the struggles female athletes face, I founded the Women Sports Forum (WSF)—a platform dedicated to empowering women through sports. WSF is free to join and offers a safe space for women to train, compete, and showcase their talent. Through WSF, I have successfully organized several groundbreaking sports events, including:

  • Jashn-e-Azadi Football Tournament – Celebrating sports and patriotism.
  • Quaid-e-Azam Legacy Futsal Tournament – Providing young girls with a competitive platform.
  • Women’s Throwball Tournament – Held in collaboration with Urban Turf in February, featuring two categories: U-17 and Above 24.

Despite financial and logistical hurdles, I remain committed to expanding WSF, with a long-term vision of securing a dedicated sports ground for women athletes in Karachi. A space where women athletes can train without restrictions, compete with confidence, and build a strong sports community. This dream is not just about having a physical facility; it is about creating an environment where women feel empowered, supported, and celebrated in sports. I envision WSF growing into a nationwide movement, inspiring young girls across Pakistan to pursue their athletic dreams without fear or limitations.

Balancing Multiple Roles with Excellence

Beyond advocating for women’s sports, I am deeply invested in sports education, believing that physical activity is just as crucial as academic learning. As a teacher, I strive to nurture young minds through structured training programs, ensuring that my students not only develop their athletic skills but also cultivate essential life values such as teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. I take pride in watching them grow—both on and off the field—as they gain confidence, resilience, and a passion for sports that will stay with them for life.

Like many, I have faced financial struggles, but they have only fueled my determination to rise above limitations. My goal is not just to survive but to thrive—to achieve financial independence, own a home where my family feels secure, and travel the world to witness and learn from different sporting cultures. While these personal aspirations drive me, my ultimate mission remains the same: to uplift and empower women in sports, ensuring that no girl has to give up on her athletic dreams due to societal or financial barriers.

The Road Ahead

I am eager to contribute as an FPSC Physical Training Instructor (Grade 16), where I hope to shape policies that benefit female athletes.

The Women Sports Forum is also expanding its reach, with more tournaments and events planned, ensuring more women step onto the field and prove their abilities. From being an athlete to becoming a leader, mentor, and change-maker, I am not just participating in the game—I am redefining it.

And this is just the beginning. Women’s sports in Pakistan will never be the same again, and I am proud to be a part of this transformation.

I envision a future where every aspiring women athlete in Pakistan has the resources, support, and encouragement to chase her dreams fearlessly. Through continuous advocacy, mentorship, and structured programs, I am committed to creating a lasting impact—one that extends beyond my journey and paves the way for generations to come.

This mission is bigger than just sports; it is about empowerment, breaking stereotypes, and fostering a culture where women are seen as equals on and off the field. With every match played, every tournament organized, and every barrier shattered, we are writing a new chapter for women in sports—one filled with resilience, progress, and boundless opportunities.

The road ahead is challenging, but I embrace it with determination and unwavering passion. The movement has begun, and I am ready to see it through.
